Somapoetics [1973-]

Eros also has its Intellect. I would speak to that in Quasha’s Somapoetics. There is a pleasure in it that is thinkable. The arguments of lust have too often confuted growths of logical structure. Here they con/foutre each other, twine around, somewhat spin. Of the several longer structures being sung these days, Quasha’s seems among the clearest, most vexed, funny, even in a way duplicit (but then song of its nature tends to enthymeme)—it revises itself, it hides dappled among its many sources, it darts. But I think of the ogives of its aspiration, sharp slits in the apparent substance of fact & theory through which Quasha displays, often enough to my taste, exciting & logically voluptuous enactments. Depth & depthesses. Our sense is grateful for the heat. Like all hot books, Somapoetics writhes in friction. I poise my native Fire here, though Q’s interlocutors are nymphs of an opposite Element who teach the subtler frictions, musculature of water. To my sense of it, this present time is focused on the new possibility, perennial, Osiris restored from his long dismemberment: the long poem, long song, long count, possible among us. Of all the long processes now going forward, I feel Somapoetics of the most interesting. It touches me close.

There are poets who raise the problem of consciousness. They remind us that we are ordinarily asleep to the great spiritual adventures of our age. Challenging our habits, they renew the world for us. George Quasha’s Somapoetics, both by its intellectual range and its visionary appetite, partakes of that noble revolutionary lineage.
